These meaningful vases are hand-carved from a single piece of sandalwood and feature a smooth, cut-out heart as the focal point. Designs incorporate both the rough inner bark of the sandalwood tree and smooth, polished sandalwood to give each vase character and to utilize more of the tree's wood.
Fair trade from Mozambique. Sold individually, available in two different sizes. Medium measures 4.5"L x 3"W x 10"H. Large measures 12"H x 3.5"W. Due to the handcrafted nature of this item, variation is expected.

We work with an amazing co-op in Kenya, the Gikomba Wood Carving Cooperative, a group of woodcarvers of all ages who work in an open-air workshop in Nairobi. This environmentally-responsible group takes care to legally procure all types of African wood used in their products, and they are skilled at using all parts of the tree in their artwork.
Kenyan artisans create stylish desktop storage vessels from dried calabash gourds, which grow abundantly in the Kenyan countryside. Each vessel is dyed to an earthy brown hue, then etched with assorted safari-inspired designs. Woven natural fiber adorns the top of each gourd.
Carved designs will vary. Because each item is handcrafted, slight variations may occur.

Gourds, also called calabash, are a sustainable, organic vessel made from the dried shells of squash or pumpkins. In Kenya, the dried gourds were traditionally used as a bowl for food or for storing water. Today, Kenyan artisans use gourds to craft beautiful works of art.
Nairobi artisans complement the organic shapes of dried gourds, which grow prolifically in Africa, with a beautiful dip-dyed finish.
